How to Stay Motivated During Your Remote Internship

Muhammed , Digital Marketing Intern

We as a humanity are encountering big distress in recent times. Every part of the world is negatively affected because of the coronavirus pandemic. The health care system is affected badly in most of the country. Factories and companies stopped their activity and their employees became jobless, the unemployment rate became too high in some countries, and the recruitment process stopped. In addition to these, some experts think that a second coronavirus disease wave has started and Turkey’s number of cases of Covid-19 have increased in recent days shows that their idea is true. As a fresh graduate from university, we live in a period where the chances of finding a good job are almost zero. For this reason, I understand that we will have to stay at home for a long time. With the remote education I have been in since the spring semester, I have tried to fill my free time at home by constantly doing something. These were things like reading books, watching movies and series, listening to music. But after graduation, I realized that I should also do activities that can contribute to my long-term career. In short, I can say that I need to improve myself and learn new things for my career. First of all, I have started my motivation for a remote internship for such reasons.

Second, being with the family is a great opportunity to focus on the internship at a distance. I would like to explain this in more detail. First of all, the spiritual support from the family is a nice factor for focus. Despite the bad processes we go through, the feeling of trust I find when I am with my family is a good factor when I focus on my career. Also, having a mother's meal while staying at home is also a big factor for motivation. Due to university education, I lived in Ankara - which is the capital city of Turkey - for 4 years. I lived in a student house with my friends during this period. Naturally, it was difficult to find a mother's meal in such a house. A lack of quality nutrition like this can lead to a lack of motivation.

Thirdly, I had a reason to be an employee of a foreign company. In this way, I thought that I could have an opportunity to increase my speaking and understanding skills in English. The language of my university education is English, but I could not improve my speaking skills much during this period. There were always Turkish speaking friends around me and I was just listening to the lessons and writing articles in English. I think I can improve my speaking skills with such an opportunity, and this allows me not to lower my motivation. I would like to express my gratitude for the remote internship. Besides speaking skills, an internship which is outside of Turkey can be a big step forward for the start of my career. This step can be a factor in the good progress of my career. I can say that this opportunity can also be effective for my motivation in a good way.

We can listen to music to increase our motivation during the remote internship. Not all types of music can be effective in this regard, so listening to the right music at the right time is essential. These kinds of music should have no lyrics and only instrumental. Classical music can be shown as the best example of this. When we listen to this music when we have difficulty focusing, our will to focus will increase. Baroque music is more effective for this work. Vivaldi, Bach and Handel composed songs that are very easy to listen to and affect motivation in a good way. For example, Vivaldi’s four-season album can be a very good motivational tool. I made a playlist of classical music on Spotify, and when my motivation fell while studying, I was listening to music from here. It was effective in increasing my motivation. Now I think it would be beneficial if I do the same thing during the remote internship.

Finally, we should do whatever we like in our spare time to increase motivation. These might be watching movies and TV series for me. We can easily get away from today's stress in a completely fictional environment. On the other hand, reading books can be given as an example. Reading books has many benefits. If we read a book when we are bored and imagine that we live with the fictional characters of the book, we can easily get away from the factors that bother us. In addition to this, when we read a large number of different fictional characters from different books, our sense of empathy develops and allows us to be successful people in human relations.

In addition, our motivation may increase even if we do sports or walks in nature. Our home is very close to a national park and I can occasionally go there and increase my motivation.  When all this can be done, I think our motivation for a remote internship, which is an important step for future profits, can be high.

Computers are one of the work tools that we use to check emails, research any topics, and message instantly. We spend 8 hours per day working remotely, it’s not surprising it is troublesome to unplug from them. Spending so much time in front of a screen has a bad effect on your health and the business.

Compared to working at the office, there are many distractions, less communication and less accountability at home. But it does not mean you cannot be efficient. We have prepared some tips to increase your productivity and efficiency while working remotely. 1. Set regular working hours While doing remote work, it is tempting to give yourself flexibility in terms of working hours and breaks. Sometimes it results in spending more than 8 hours on your work. Setting regular hours of work that you need to fulfil your duties and get your work done will help increase your efficiency. You should work when you are the most productive.
